Big McGee Lake is cradled by granite slopes jutting skyward. Two passes, Hopkins and McGee, provide the only way out. The climb is strenuous — switchbacks laden with granite stairsteps — but the lake is well worth it. We spent three nights lakeside in the upper valley.
